Cool show alert! Lipbone Redding at The Mint in LA, Thursday 9/2/10
I’ve been buried under a pile of work this past month so I apologize for my dearth of posts, but I had to pop my head up to let Los Angeles folks know about a show you cannot miss! NYC-based Lipbone Redding and the Lipbone Orchestra will be performing this Thursday, September 2nd at The Mint on Pico and La Cienega at 7 and 9 p.m. If you haven’t been to the Mint yet, it’s a great little venue that consistently has the best in blues, soul, and roots music. Get to the area early and have dinner at one of my favorite spots in LA for Cuban food, La Versailles…yum love that garlic chicken….but back to the music!
Lipbone Redding is a phenomenon I saw live last year and promptly came home that night and wrote a blog post about him. His music is blend of soul, blues, jazz, swing, and folk and he’s got a great on-stage personality, from telling fabled stories to leading sing-a-longs with kids. That night I recall when I first got to the party, I heard the music from the front yard and it was bit surreal. I heard this sweet New Orleans groove sound floating out to me and it wasn’t the usual sound I heard in LA. So of course I couldn’t wait to see the band. Or so I thought! I recall hearing some sweet horns (sounded like a trumpet with a wah wah pedal) and I thought, “dang do they have a band set up back there?!” Turns out it was Lipbone’s voice! He is a voicestrumentalist! You won’t believe it’s not a real trumpet.
Here are a few videos. See you at The Mint!
